I heard about it this morning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/10\/24\/163509646\/sheep-thrills-senegals-idol-style-pageant-for-rams\">on NPR<\/a> and loved it sincerely; I enjoyed Ms. Quist-Arcton&#8217;s report (she is always excellent), but I could have done without Inskeep&#8217;s mocking tone during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8DUEAG5eO6c\">intro and outro<\/a>. Yes, Steve, livestock <em>are<\/em> important to a lot of people, even in the developed west! Off to Youtube where a lot of the Khar Bii episodes have been posted. I can pick out a bunch of French &#8211; mouton is, for example, prominent and I pick out bits of the explanation of toxoplasmosis, but I&#8217;m mostly lost. Is it because my French skills are so horrible, or are the presenters speaking a mix of French and Wolof? Or perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolof_language\">Dakar-Wolof<\/a>? I think I heard &#8216;nyami&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>TIL (things I learned, in internetspeak):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to spell Ofeibia Quist-Arcton&#8217;s first name. A <em>lovely<\/em> name.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Wolof words in English are believed to include <em><a title=\"Yam (vegetable)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yam_%28vegetable%29\">yam<\/a><\/em>, from Wolof <em>nyami<\/em> &#8220;to eat food&#8221;, <em>nyam<\/em> in Barbadian English <sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolof_language#cite_note-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> meaning <em>to eat<\/em> (also compare Seychellois <em>nyanmnyanm<\/em>, also meaning <em>to eat<\/em> <sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolof_language#cite_note-3\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> )&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolof_language\">*<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Concours Culinaire sounds much more inviting that Cook-off.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fufu\">Fufu<\/a>! Disclosure &#8211; I knew about fufu previously.
