{"id":19749,"date":"2018-09-03T12:58:25","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T16:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/?p=19749"},"modified":"2018-09-03T14:44:55","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T18:44:55","slug":"weimar-berlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/archives\/19749","title":{"rendered":"Weimar Berlin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proximate cause of this post is friend K&#8217;s recent re-instagram of Drawn &amp; Quarterly&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawnandquarterly.com\/berlin\">book announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BnJuVG4FZBu\/<\/p>\n<p>Initially I figured that it was a combined re-issue of books 1 &amp; 2: <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2PYQhsV\">Berlin: City of Stones<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2MNTg9W\">Berlin: City of Smoke<\/a>. Turns out it&#8217;s more than that &#8211; the third book in the series, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2MKXSNY\">Berlin: City of Light<\/a> comes out tomorrow as does <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2wDaSem\">Berlin<\/a> (referenced in the instagram) which collects all 3. Even though I should not be buying any additional books *Snake from the Simpsons voice* <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CJh1hmmLLzw?t=11s\">YOINK<\/a>! The first and critically important reason is the current political. moment. If a Washingtonian can reassure a federal government employee that a dinner party will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/08\/emails-link-former-dhs-policy-analyst-to-white-nationalists\/568843\/\"><em>judenfrei<\/em><\/a>&#8230; Do I have to diagram it for you? A less world-historically awful reason is a fantastic show &#8211; Babylon Berlin on Netflix. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Politics! Drugs! Crime! Sex! Subtitles! Watch it!<\/p>\n<p>[EDITED]*<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Babylon Berlin<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/a-hit-drama-in-germany-babylon-berlin-crosses-the-atlantic-1517054137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tracker-added=\"true\">creators have said<\/a>\u00a0that part of the appeal of setting a narrative in that particular era is to be able to show that the Nazis didn&#8217;t appear in a vacuum. There were forces at work in society that Adolf Hitler effectively tapped into to propel his own vision forward, and show is a good framework in which to let them play out. In fact, you&#8217;ll only hear the name Hitler once throughout the 16-episode run (the equivalent of two seasons), but his shadow looms large, namely through a number of language cues that indicate a growing nationalistic base.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/2018\/02\/190560\/babylon-berlin-review-german-netflix-series\">*<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uekZpkYf7-E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Triple bonus points for a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paternoster\">paternoster<\/a>, by the way. I think I&#8217;ll read Lutes&#8217; Berlin trilogy and re-stream Babylon Berlin.
