{"id":20082,"date":"2019-04-20T13:16:06","date_gmt":"2019-04-20T17:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/?p=20082"},"modified":"2019-04-20T13:16:06","modified_gmt":"2019-04-20T17:16:06","slug":"the-chiricahua-mountains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/archives\/20082","title":{"rendered":"The Chiricahua Mountains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to say a little more about the Chiricahua Mountains; when I met <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irodeherefromkentucky.com\/\">Drew<\/a> in El Paso he told the that the Chiricahuas were an absolute must-experience and he was right. They&#8217;re an ecological Four Corners: Rockies from the north, Sierra Madre from the south, Chihuahuan desert from the east and Sonoran desert from the west. Add in the effects of altitude &#8211; a change in vegetation, etc. every thousand feet &#8211; and you have one of those meeting places in the landscape with incredible diversity. The part of the ride that took me through Cave Creek Canyon was my favorite &#8211; I&#8217;m a sucker for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bosque\">bosque<\/a> dells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Cave Creek Canyon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/doncoyote\/47599070142\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/47599070142_ff92114697_z.jpg\" alt=\"Cave Creek Canyon\" width=\"360\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d mentioned that hummingbirds woke me up in Portal; &#8220;In fact, thirteen species of hummingbirds are know to occur in the Chiricahua Mountains, and many of these are Mexican species that are rarely seen in the United States.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/learn\/nature\/birds.htm\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/learn\/nature\/birds.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20083\" src=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Capture.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Capture.jpg 708w, http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Capture-300x123.jpg 300w, http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Capture-500x206.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOne of the big draws is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Elegant_Trogon\/overview\">Elegant Trogon<\/a>* &#8211; I was told I was a week too early to see one, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/2300443182\">B&#8217;s feed on Strava<\/a> indicates it was more like 4 days. Ah, well &#8211; a good excuse to return with birding as a focus. I did see a Gould&#8217;s turkey, so that&#8217;s 2 new wild turkey subspecies this trip (the other is the Rio Grande turkey). Merriam&#8217;s wild turkey is a possibility in a week; I&#8217;ll keep my fingers crossed.<\/p>\n<p>One last reason to dig the area &#8211; Portal has very dark skies. The stars at night are amazing!<\/p>\n<p>*pronunciation note &#8211; I&#8217;ve always said &#8216;trogon&#8217; with a hard G, but I heard someone say trojawn in Portal. Google search says hard G is correct; maybe the J person was from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/slang\/jawn\/\">Philly<\/a> &#8211; or maybe Google is wrong?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to say a little more about the Chiricahua Mountains; when I met Drew in El Paso he told the that the Chiricahuas were an absolute must-experience and he was right.
