{"id":2485,"date":"2010-05-06T19:39:24","date_gmt":"2010-05-06T23:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/?p=2485"},"modified":"2010-05-07T07:51:58","modified_gmt":"2010-05-07T11:51:58","slug":"the-changed-media-landscape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/archives\/2485","title":{"rendered":"The Changed Media Landscape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A I write this there&#8217;s a bit of\u00a0weirdness going on over in the metropole (Portsmouth) &#8211; it&#8217;s unclear exactly what is happening, but it involves a bus, a 911 call reporting a\u00a0suspicious\u00a0package\/device, local and state police, AFT agents and robots. I found out about it via Twitter\u00a0\u00a0about 15 minutes after police showed up and it became obvious to local folk that something was up (around noon\u00a0today). Some of the things I&#8217;ve noticed since then:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It didn&#8217;t take long for a hashtag &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/search.twitter.com\/search?q=%2303801bomb\">#03801bomb<\/a> &#8211; to be declared. Click on the tag to go to the Twitter search page for the latest tweets.<\/li>\n<li>There was a steady stream of information, photography, video and comedy all afternoon. I knew when folks started leaving the bus within minutes thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/WireNH\/status\/13499931553\">@WireNH<\/a> (I picked the tweet that combined news and the funny).<\/li>\n<li>A video taken by @Bill_Lord of one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitvid.com\/YHULD\">bombbots unloading<\/a> got picked up by a Boston newscast.<\/li>\n<li>Sometime during the afternoon, a foursquare (location sharing social media app) venue got set up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Screenshot-foursquare-Bomb-Scare-Portsmouth-NH-Google-Chrome.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2486 aligncenter\" title=\"Screenshot-foursquare :: Bomb Scare :: Portsmouth, NH - Google Chrome\" src=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Screenshot-foursquare-Bomb-Scare-Portsmouth-NH-Google-Chrome.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Screenshot-foursquare-Bomb-Scare-Portsmouth-NH-Google-Chrome.png 1003w, http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Screenshot-foursquare-Bomb-Scare-Portsmouth-NH-Google-Chrome-300x290.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dan did a bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/shortstream.tv\/v3\/video\/1416\">livestreaming<\/a> from his mother-in-law&#8217;s living room &#8211; which happened to be across the street from the bus.<\/li>\n<li>I saw at least one tweet that referenced UStream &#8211; another livestreaming app. Keep in mind, all you need in order to go live from virtually anywhere is a decent cell phone and tiny tech chops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I caught some of the teevee coverage as well. The informal coverage was better &#8211; much better. Nobody (I suspect, including many of the cops on scene) knew what was going on &#8211; last I looked, we still don&#8217;t. That didn&#8217;t stop <a href=\"http:\/\/www.necn.com\/05\/06\/10\/One-bus-passenger-questioned-via-cell-ph\/landing_newengland.html?blockID=230082&amp;feedID=4206\">NECN<\/a> &#8211; or the crowd watching &#8211; from covering it, nor should it have. Instead of the 2 or three stills and speculation\/repetition of a very few facts that the teevee was offering, the crowd supplied more pictures, bad jokes and updates when something actually happened. I got much more of a sense of the situation from the &#8216;new&#8217; media feed.
