{"id":2706,"date":"2010-06-10T08:34:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-10T12:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/?p=2706"},"modified":"2010-06-10T11:48:38","modified_gmt":"2010-06-10T15:48:38","slug":"wordly-wise-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/archives\/2706","title":{"rendered":"Wordly Wise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Derny (also spelled derney) &#8211; &#8220;a <a title=\"Motorized bicycle\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motorized_bicycle\">motorized bicycle<\/a> for motor-paced <a title=\"Track cycling\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Track_cycling\">track cycling<\/a> events such as during <a title=\"Six-day racing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Six-day_racing\">six-day<\/a> and <a title=\"Keirin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keirin\">Keirin<\/a> racing) or motor-paced <a title=\"Road bicycle racing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Road_bicycle_racing\">road races<\/a>. It is driven by a 98cc Zurcher two-stroke engine and by being pedalled through a fixed gear, typically of 70 teeth on the front chainring and 11 on the sprocket on the back wheel [!!]. The combination allows for smooth acceleration and slowing, important when the rider taking pace is centimetres from the pacer&#8217;s shielded back wheel. A coupling between the motor and the back wheel ensures the machine will not stop dead if the motor seizes.[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>The name <em>derny<\/em> is now applied to all such vehicles, regardless of manufacturer.
