This time it&#8217;s a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/bibliodyssey.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/chinese-bird-album.html\">Chinese bird portraits<\/a> &#8211; among the ducks and birds of paradise and finches and pheasants I spied a tragopan. Tragopans live in an area that&#8217;s been front and center in my <a href=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/archives\/3163\">reading list<\/a> lately; off I clicked to see if I could figure out which species was being represented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bibliodyssey.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/chinese-bird-album.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4133\/5085685929_3b3c4866d1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m basing my ID on the lappet &#8211; obviously, I&#8217;m guessing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temminck%27s_Tragopan\"><em>Tragopan temminckii<\/em><\/a>. A bit of etymological fun:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These birds are commonly called &#8220;horned pheasants&#8221; because of two  brightly-colored, fleshy horns on their heads that they can erect during  courtship displays.
