Via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/biodivlibrary\/\">BioDivLibrary Flickrstream<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/biodiversitylibrary.org\/page\/2836732\">Album of Abyssinian Birds and Mammals From Paintings by Louis Aggasiz Fuertes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Agassiz_Fuertes\">Fuertes<\/a>, for those who don&#8217;t know him or his work, was an ornithologist and painter. I&#8217;ve loved his art since I first encountered it (I was maybe 10 years old?) in a coffee table book that was, at that point, way out of my price range. Because it successfully resisted during the scramble for Africa &#8211; and for many other reasons &#8211; it&#8217;s a fascinating region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, on with the show. I&#8217;m half tempted to post all the Fuertes paintings, but I&#8217;ll resist. As a result, ravens have been front and center in my imagination (if you don&#8217;t understand the connection, you really should read the book). Fuertes remarks that the Thick Billed Raven is &#8220;vulturine in habits&#8221; &#8211; pretty typical raven behavior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/biodiversitylibrary.org\/page\/2836697\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3926\" title=\"fuertes thick billed raven\" src=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fuertes-thick-billed-raven-808x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fuertes-thick-billed-raven-808x1024.jpg 808w, http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fuertes-thick-billed-raven-236x300.jpg 236w, http:\/\/hawkdog.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fuertes-thick-billed-raven.jpg 1356w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Waxing extremely vulturine, the badass of the carcass crowd, the Lappet-faced Vulture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>&#8220;They are the most powerful and aggressive of the <a title=\"Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\">African<\/a> <a title=\"Vulture\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vulture\">vultures<\/a>,  and other vultures will usually cede a carcass to the Lappet-faced  Vulture.
