He was 96. To describe him as a <a href=\"http:\/\/outside.away.com\/outside\/features\/200509\/bradford-washburn-1.html\">legend<\/a> (at least in New England) doesn&#8217;t do him justice. He was a cartographer, a mountaineer, the Director of Boston&#8217;s Museum of Science and, of course, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=6369091\">photographer<\/a>. Of the three who I think of as the holy trinity of New England tech photography (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Eugene_Edgerton\">Doc Edgerton<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edwin_Land\">Ed Land<\/a> and Brad Washburn), he was the one who combined technological achievement with an amazing eye for beauty. A friend of mine ran into Mr. Washburn on the summit of Mount Washington  a few years back &#8211; Washburn was in his late eighties and still storming around the high places. With respect and admiration &#8211; goodbye&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washburnportfolio.com\/?gclid=CLK14_bs3YkCFRtCgQodLhCpFQ\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawkdog.net\/pub\/pix\/washburn.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bradford Washburn died last Wednesday.
