Homing Pigeons

I’ve wanted to get a loft of homing pigeons going for ages. A friend found nine beauties for me at a poultry swap meet (yes, such things exist) – at least I think they’re beautiful. A few portraits:

Beautiful eyes.

*

Some amazing subtle iridescence.

Especially fitting: the man who sold them to my friend spoke Greek -his wife translated- and he was very concerned that they’d be well taken care of. Pigeons and the culture around them are amazing; permit me to recommend Steve Bodio’s Aloft.

  1. Good looking pigeons, John– remind me to send some pix of my experimental Spanish pouter- homer mixes when they finish molting (late springs in the NM mountains make us slower than NH!)

Did you meet Patrick at Sy & Howard’s signing? He is a great source of ideas on homers (& a writer and bird dog man & houndsman & botanist & horticulturalist!) who lives near Boston. I have his email but Sy probably has his phone…

  2. If Patrick was there, he was incognito (which wouldn’t surprise me – I think Sy described him as reclusive in the extreme). Will have to hit Sy up for an introduction!

  3. He was there– and you are probably right. But I’ll give you an intro too when the time comes. I met him through my cousin Mary Ellen “Melon” Bodio and Sy through me.
